As a kid, I liked to lay on the floor on sunny days and position myself in such a way that the only view out the window was the blue sky. Not a single inch of another wall, building, or tree could be visible. If any hints of reality were blocked and all I could see was the sky, then the possibilities for what lay below were infinite. I could be wherever and whenever I wanted.

Virtual reality fulfills a similar purpose, allowing us to travel to other dimensions from the comfort of our home. However, these realities are scripted. As users, we are limited to the spaces and actions that have been created for us by others. Imagination is made redundant. Daydreaming becomes consumption.

“The Infinite Below” is a minimalistic VR space that invites you to script your own reality. By eliminating the visual obstacles and distractions we might encounter in real life, it provides a calming space for meditation and daydreaming, inviting you to speculate what might be beyond the surrounding wall, below the blue sky. The entrance is covered by a light curtain, concealing yet not confining.

Through this work, I want to explore the relationship between virtual reality and the mind. Some may find comfort in a blank canvas, or in the escape from everyday life that virtual reality provides. Others may feel trapped, either by the inability to see their surroundings or by the awareness of unreality.
